Why write Opera?
I was an immigrant, just out of the boat in New York. So I went around, I wanted to see what the city has to offer.
I saw this beautiful theater, in the center of a Square with a fountain in the middle, surrounded by other theaters. The one in the center is the biggest, nicest theater in the city, with the best orchestra, the best choir, the best stage, the most expensive productions...
- The square is called Lincoln Center. The big theater is called The Met, short for Metropolitan.
I said:
- That's all very nice, what kind of music do they play there?
- Opera.
- Oh, really? Opera... My dad used to listen to that.
Ok: I'll write opera.
